10/30 Earth Science Update and homework due 11/6

Hi folks,
Sorry for any confusion.  The homework email I sent out earlier was correct but it had the incorrect subject line.  I"m sending again with the correct subject.

During this week's class we spent a good bit of time with the periodic table and reviewed protons, neutrons and electrons.  The next few weeks we will be diving quite deeply into the periodic table and the language of atoms and molecules.

For homework this week:

Read 34 - 38 in the text book.
Also do the enclosed worksheet.  I've included the answer key so that you can check your work.  Beware, there are some isotopes and ions on the sheet so pay close attention.

10/23 Earth Science Recording - The weird tiny little atom

https://youtu.be/pqjwm70hlTQ

10/23 Earth Science update and homework due 10/30

Hi folks,

Today we spent time getting into the strangeness that is the building block of all matter, the atom.  We discussed just how incredibly small it is as well as how ridiculously empty it is.  We also talked a little bit about the strange things that happen at the quantum level.

For homework this week do questions 1 - 23 on pages 30 and 31 of your text book.  You may need to look through the chapter to find some of the answers.

A bit of a clarification to this week's assignment.

Hi folks,

Just a bit of a note on this week's assignment.

I'm going to grade the lab report and the presentation as two separate assignments.  Since this is more work than usual, excellent presentations and lab reports will be worth 15 points!!  Average ones will be worth the usual 10 points and if you are missing something from your lab report or presentation it may be worth less than 10 points.

This is going to be graded according to how much care you took to do your experiment.  Did you include a good graph?  Would someone be able to replicate your experiment from what you've said/written.  Are your conclusions appropriate for the data you collected?  Are your methods sound?  Did you consider all possible variables and control the ones you can?  Etc.

Good luck and have fun!  Remember, be sure to ask questions if you're unsure of anything.

Best,

Jim Mueller

10/9 Earth Science Class and homework due 10/16

Hi folks,

Today we took the time to discuss the experiment ideas that folks brought to class.  Sounds like there will be some very interesting things going on this week.

We also took some time to explore everything from the farthest distances in space to the smallest particles in the universe.  Space and matter is an incredible thing.

I'm including some of the videos that we watched this week.  You may want to take a look.  They are pretty mind blowing.

For homework this week go ahead and do those experiments we talked about.  Feel free to email me with any questions throughout the week

Once you do your experiment write it up using the lab template you used for the Diaper experiment.

Next week, you are going to be presenting your experiment to the class.  Your overall goal is to attempt to have everyone in class fully understand what you did, what your results where, and what your conclusion is.  You do not need to redo your entire experiment for the class but you will need to:

1.  Explain the purpose of the experiment.

2.  Explain your hypothesis.

3.  Explain how you did the experiment.  What were your methods?  What are the independent, dependent and constant variables.

4.  Show your data.  Try to make it so that the class can see and understand your data.  The best way to do that would be to make a graph out of your results.

5.  State your conclusion.  What did your experiment show?  If the data is inconclusive, it's fine to report that

6.  Please feel free to send me pictures, graphs, any thing you may need to help with your presentation.

Good luck everyone and have fun!

10/2 Earth Science update and homework due 10/9

Hi all!

Today we had a great time doing one of my favorite experiments, the Diabolical Diaper Dilemma!  I had the kids create an experiment in order to find out which on of four different diapers held the most….water…  Turns out that Luvs seemed to be the best "water" holder for the price.  Many of the groups got more than one liter of water in a single diaper!  That's over 1 kilogram of water or 2.2 pounds in one diaper!

For homework this week there are two assignments:

1.  Think of an experiment.  Not this week but next week, I'd like everyone to conduct their own experiment at home and bring it to class.  I'll give more details in class next week about how this is going to work but for now, come up with an experiment you can do at home.  It should be fairly simple.  Something that takes about an hour or two to do at home.  Bring in your experiment proposal to the next class.  Feel free to email me if you want to check in about your experiment ahead of time.  So, to be clear, just bring your experiment idea to class next week.  The week following you will be doing the experiment at home and presenting it in class.

2.  Use the following template to write up todays Diaper Lab in a lab report format.
