12/11 Earth Science update and homework due 12/18

Hi folks,

Today we discussed minerals in a bit more detail and we also took the time to prepare a solution to create sugar crystals.  If all goes well, you should begin to see crystals form in 4 to 7 days.

Homework for this week is to read pages 73 - 79 in the text and answer the following questions.

1.  (From the video we saw today.) Why is glass not a mineral?

2.  Why is a sugar crystal not a mineral?

3.  Are gems minerals?

4.  What makes amethyst different from quartz?

5.  According to page 74 and 75, which gems can be found in North Carolina?

6.  What is the name of the largest diamond ever found?

7.  Why are quartz crystals used in timekeeping?

8.  What is the definition of the word "ore"?

9.  What is the ore for aluminum?

10.   What are two minerals where titanium can be found?

Re: Class tomorrow??

Good Morning

Sorry just seeing this yeaterday was very crazy and busy. With all the unexpected snow/sleet/rain in the morning. I am fine with what ever Jim decides. If the neighborhood street doesn't get much sun that could cause a problem for sure. Sorry for the late reply.

Re: Class tomorrow??

James and I would be fine with driving to class. It looks like the remps will be above 40 at that time of day. But we are good with the decision of the group.

If I've got that wrong, I expect he'll be up early and send an email to say so. But again, my best information at this time is that it is cancelled.

Jim - when you get this - please confirm one way or the other. We'll all look for your email in the morning.

Re: Class tomorrow??

Sally and I were just talking about the roads tomorrow. We don't have to drive anywhere for class, but we think it's likely the roads will be worse tomorrow morning than today, due to overnight icing. Looking at the highs/lows by hour for tomorrow, it could still be freezing at noon or it could be in the high 40's. That would make quite a difference.  I think we need to hear from the people who will be out on the roads. I suspect we're ok either way, as long as power stays on, and so far it has.

Earth Science Homework

Hi folks,

Something very odd happened with the homework email and for some reason both versions of the worksheet have answers.  On my screen, one has blanks and the other has answers but somehow by the time it gets to you all, both are full of answers.

Anyway, I believe this version will have blanks.

10/30 Earth Science Update and homework due 11/6

Hi folks,
Sorry for any confusion.  The homework email I sent out earlier was correct but it had the incorrect subject line.  I"m sending again with the correct subject.

During this week's class we spent a good bit of time with the periodic table and reviewed protons, neutrons and electrons.  The next few weeks we will be diving quite deeply into the periodic table and the language of atoms and molecules.

For homework this week:

Read 34 - 38 in the text book.
Also do the enclosed worksheet.  I've included the answer key so that you can check your work.  Beware, there are some isotopes and ions on the sheet so pay close attention.

10/23 Earth Science Recording - The weird tiny little atom

https://youtu.be/pqjwm70hlTQ

10/23 Earth Science update and homework due 10/30

Hi folks,

Today we spent time getting into the strangeness that is the building block of all matter, the atom.  We discussed just how incredibly small it is as well as how ridiculously empty it is.  We also talked a little bit about the strange things that happen at the quantum level.

For homework this week do questions 1 - 23 on pages 30 and 31 of your text book.  You may need to look through the chapter to find some of the answers.

A bit of a clarification to this week's assignment.

Hi folks,

Just a bit of a note on this week's assignment.

I'm going to grade the lab report and the presentation as two separate assignments.  Since this is more work than usual, excellent presentations and lab reports will be worth 15 points!!  Average ones will be worth the usual 10 points and if you are missing something from your lab report or presentation it may be worth less than 10 points.

This is going to be graded according to how much care you took to do your experiment.  Did you include a good graph?  Would someone be able to replicate your experiment from what you've said/written.  Are your conclusions appropriate for the data you collected?  Are your methods sound?  Did you consider all possible variables and control the ones you can?  Etc.

Good luck and have fun!  Remember, be sure to ask questions if you're unsure of anything.

10/9 Earth Science Class and homework due 10/16

Hi folks,

Today we took the time to discuss the experiment ideas that folks brought to class.  Sounds like there will be some very interesting things going on this week.

We also took some time to explore everything from the farthest distances in space to the smallest particles in the universe.  Space and matter is an incredible thing.

I'm including some of the videos that we watched this week.  You may want to take a look.  They are pretty mind blowing.

For homework this week go ahead and do those experiments we talked about.  Feel free to email me with any questions throughout the week

Once you do your experiment write it up using the lab template you used for the Diaper experiment.

Next week, you are going to be presenting your experiment to the class.  Your overall goal is to attempt to have everyone in class fully understand what you did, what your results where, and what your conclusion is.  You do not need to redo your entire experiment for the class but you will need to:

1.  Explain the purpose of the experiment.

2.  Explain your hypothesis.

3.  Explain how you did the experiment.  What were your methods?  What are the independent, dependent and constant variables.

4.  Show your data.  Try to make it so that the class can see and understand your data.  The best way to do that would be to make a graph out of your results.

5.  State your conclusion.  What did your experiment show?  If the data is inconclusive, it's fine to report that

6.  Please feel free to send me pictures, graphs, any thing you may need to help with your presentation.

Good luck everyone and have fun!

10/2 Earth Science update and homework due 10/9

Hi all!

Today we had a great time doing one of my favorite experiments, the Diabolical Diaper Dilemma!  I had the kids create an experiment in order to find out which on of four different diapers held the most….water…  Turns out that Luvs seemed to be the best "water" holder for the price.  Many of the groups got more than one liter of water in a single diaper!  That's over 1 kilogram of water or 2.2 pounds in one diaper!

For homework this week there are two assignments:

1.  Think of an experiment.  Not this week but next week, I'd like everyone to conduct their own experiment at home and bring it to class.  I'll give more details in class next week about how this is going to work but for now, come up with an experiment you can do at home.  It should be fairly simple.  Something that takes about an hour or two to do at home.  Bring in your experiment proposal to the next class.  Feel free to email me if you want to check in about your experiment ahead of time.  So, to be clear, just bring your experiment idea to class next week.  The week following you will be doing the experiment at home and presenting it in class.

2.  Use the following template to write up todays Diaper Lab in a lab report format.

9/25 Earth Science update and homework due 10/2

Hi folks,

Today we spent time taking a look at looking. In my opinion, one of the most important parts of the scientific method, and indeed, just living, is the ability to observe. We all walk through the world with preconceived notions of the way things are or should be. One of the things that made Einstein and Newton so good at what they did, was that they were able to truly "see" what was happening. Free from preconceived notions and ideas. We did several activities today designed to show how our preconceived ideas get in the way of our perceptions and to try to get better at seeing what is really there.

For homework this week I want you to work on your observation skills. Keep an "Observation Log". Each day, either when you wake up or go to bed, write down five things you notice about your room. I'll bet that this will be very easy at first but that over time it may become more difficult and you find your observations getting more specific and more generic. (I'll talk more about what I mean during next week's class.)

Have fun with this!

Best,

Jim Mueller

9/18 Earth Science class and homework due 9/25

Hi folks,

No recording this week since the majority of the time was spent doing activities.  If you missed class this week feel free to take a look at the "Communication" chapter of the eBook I sent a couple of weeks ago.  That should give a good overview of what we did in class this week.

This week we worked on a skill that is not only important for science but is also vital for just living, communication.

I attempted to show the students that we tend to make a lot of assumptions when talking to people and those assumptions can sometimes lead to poor communication. In a way, science is a "language" designed to ensure that miscommunications don't happen. It's a system that is familiar to everyone that, not only, speaks clearly to the reader, but also communicates instructions to repeat the same methodology. (At least that's the hope. Not all papers meet that mark.)

I also had the students play a great "game" where they were to set up a set of blocks in secret and then give instructions to the rest of the class on how to duplicate the same set of blocks. It's surprising how difficult this can be.

For homework this week,

1. Gather any three objects, toys, silverware, blocks, coins or a combination of all.

2. Lay those objects on the table in any way you wish. (If you can, take a picture of your set up.)

3. Attempt to write a set of instructions for how to set up those three objects. Your goal is to write your instructions so clearly that you can give them to someone and they can set up the objects in the exact same way you did. (Feel free to give the instructions and objects to friends or family to try it.)

4. Bring your instructions, your picture and your objects to class next week. We will be passing them around to see if folks can reconstruct your design from your instructions. (Be sure the picture is separate from the instructions.)

Good Luck!

Science Jim classes next week

Hi folks,

Well, we're heading into the unknown here and with that in mind I figured I'd put a little plan together regarding classes for next week.

My plan is to email folks to let them know if class is a go or not.  However, my big worry at the moment for my location is loss of power/internet.  So, if you don't hear from me, assume class is OFF.

Please don't hesitate to contact me to let me know if you won't be able to make it to class for any reason.  If most folks can't make it to class we may cancel class due to lack of attendance.

My phone # is (919) 907-3217 if you wish to text or call for information about class.  Assuming my phone is still operational and has power I will get back to you ASAP.

Here's hoping this email is for not and all will be well for all of us next week!

My best wishes for safety and comfort for everyone next week!

Jim Mueller
