First off, Happy Holidays everyone!!!!  I hope your holidays are full of warmth and joy!

This week we got into the rock cycle.  Lots of terms and definitions today which we will do a bit more with in the coming weeks.

Homework is to read the text book from page 90 to 108.

12/11 Earth Science update and homework due 12/18

Hi folks,

Today we discussed minerals in a bit more detail and we also took the time to prepare a solution to create sugar crystals.  If all goes well, you should begin to see crystals form in 4 to 7 days.

Homework for this week is to read pages 73 - 79 in the text and answer the following questions.

1.  (From the video we saw today.) Why is glass not a mineral?

2.  Why is a sugar crystal not a mineral?

3.  Are gems minerals?

4.  What makes amethyst different from quartz?

5.  According to page 74 and 75, which gems can be found in North Carolina?

6.  What is the name of the largest diamond ever found?

7.  Why are quartz crystals used in timekeeping?

8.  What is the definition of the word "ore"?

9.  What is the ore for aluminum?

10.   What are two minerals where titanium can be found?

Re: Class tomorrow??

Good Morning

Sorry just seeing this yeaterday was very crazy and busy. With all the unexpected snow/sleet/rain in the morning. I am fine with what ever Jim decides. If the neighborhood street doesn't get much sun that could cause a problem for sure. Sorry for the late reply.

Hi folks,

Just want to check in and see what folks think regarding class tomorrow.  At the moment, I'm thinking of cancelling since I'm betting the roads are going to still be quite a mess.  What are your thoughts?

Re: Class tomorrow??

James and I would be fine with driving to class. It looks like the remps will be above 40 at that time of day. But we are good with the decision of the group.

Hi Jim,

I see that Jim suggested cancelling, and got 2 responses that were uncomfortable with driving. I'm just getting back to this and imagine that Jim is asleep by now. My assumption based on talking with Sally who talked with Jim and after reading this thread is:  Tomorrow's class will follow Jim's initial inclination which was to cancel. If I've got that wrong, I expect he'll be up early and send an email to say so. But again, my best information at this time is that it is cancelled.

Jim - when you get this - please confirm one way or the other. We'll all look for your email in the morning.

Thanks,

Rob.

Residential roads will be the problem for me probably only in Rob and Sally's neighborhood.  My home is close to major roads that get plowed early and often.   That said - I don't drive on snow and ice well, so if their neighborhood is ugly, I'd rather not.

Re: Class tomorrow??

Sally and I were just talking about the roads tomorrow. We don't have to drive anywhere for class, but we think it's likely the roads will be worse tomorrow morning than today, due to overnight icing. Looking at the highs/lows by hour for tomorrow, it could still be freezing at noon or it could be in the high 40's. That would make quite a difference.  I think we need to hear from the people who will be out on the roads. I suspect we're ok either way, as long as power stays on, and so far it has.

12/4 Earth Science Class update and homework due 12/11

Hi folks,

Today we discussed crystalline structure and explored different ways molecules can order themselves to create different geometric forms.

For homework this week:

Read pages 62 - 66

Answer the following questions.

1.  What is a mineral?

2.  What are some things that are made of minerals?

3.  What are four characteristics all minerals have in common?

4.  Approximately how many minerals are found on Earth?

5.  What does the word "crystalline" mean?

6.  Why isn't opal a mineral?

7.  What are three different types of shapes a crystal can form?

8.  What is magma?

9.  When you created your structures in class using spheres and toothpicks, what shapes did you make?  (Use page 64 to answer this question.)

10.  How did the Cheerios in water demonstration show crystalline structure?

11.  Fill in the blank:  If you get molecules or atoms cold enough or put a lot of pressure on them they will form a ______________.

12.  Why do people put salt on roads to prevent ice?
